Winstar Lighting Technologies’ Update From Ireland

Crossmolina is a small town in the Irish County Mayo. Officials there are connecting a wireless control network to the region’s 300 LED street lights. With the help of Silver Spring Networks, the area’s leaders are optimizing energy usage as well as management of the lights. As Winstar Lighting Technologies has learned, it’s all thanks to a mesh network.

The network is a part of a bigger effort, which also happens to bring smart meters to people. The project gives area residents access to web-based apps that offer tips, insights, and electric and gas bill projections. The apps also offer potential for smart parking management, traffic controls, vehicle chargers, and other solutions.

At Winstar Lighting Technologies, we know these things will help reduce carbon emissions far into the future. Even better, though, is their power to keep users informed. Peter Mcloughlin is an engineer on the Mayo County Council. He explained that the mesh system furthers Mayo County Council’s efforts to lower energy use, carbon emissions, and cost. He also stressed that it heightens people’s abilities to understand the way they consume power – and how to alter it.

Silver Spring Networks is doing this work all over the world. Locations include Glasgow, Copenhagen, London, Bristol, San Jose, San Antonio, Chicago, and Kolkata. Winstar Lighting Technologies asks: which city do you think should be next in line?
