Winstar Lighting Technologies on LED in Brazil

At Winstar Lighting Technologies, we know the value of LEDs and so our interest was piqued when we learned of a forum that took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil in early June to discuss street lighting. The event was held by the World Bank and The Climate Group. Officials from more than 30 of the country’s biggest cities were present. Their intent was to address the option of installing LED lighting in all municipalities.

Public lighting accounts for four percent of Brazil’s energy use. By switching to LEDs, their leaders can better pursue their commitment to improving energy efficiency by 10 percent in the next 14 years. Doing so will also decrease maintenance costs, and may even reduce accidents and crime.

At the forum, attendees pointed out that the U.S. city of Los Angeles has greatly benefitted from such efforts. Nearly $9 million is saved yearly, as well as 63 percent of energy use. Winstar Lighting Technologies has witnessed these types of outcomes where LED is used in regions all over the nation.

Peter Curley manages The Climate Group’s LED program. He noted, “There is a palpable drive to find workable financing solutions that will help Brazil’s cities move to more energy efficient LED lighting. The form has allowed challenging regional issues to be openly discussed – and we look forward to seeing more regional projects announce their LED transition plans.”

Winstar Lighting Technologies is also eager to see the impact LED lighting makes in Brazil.
